New Art Exhibit Featuring Works By Michelle Forsyth Opens April 6 At The Charleston Heights Arts Center

Artist Michelle Forsyth says her recent paintings are “informed by contemporary dialogues that favor an understanding of the world through bodily experiences rather than experiences that offer an escape from the physical such as those raised by Susan Sontag, Paul Virilio and Elaine Scarry. With their ideas in mind, I am deeply committed to calling attention to an apathetic gaze, while empathetically asserting my physicality in the work I produce.”

The public is invited to meet Forsyth and hear her discuss her work at the opening reception of “Routine Incidents” on Thursday, April 6, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, located at 800 South Brush Street. The reception will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with her gallery talk beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Call (702) 229-4674 for information.

Forsyth has been collecting images, generally from Internet media sources, that convey both detachment and loss. Using these images, she creates intricately patterned gouache works on paper that highlight the constant media reminders of the aesthetics of horror. Lately, she has begun to include digital video, installation and paper sculpture, though her work remains firmly rooted in the language of painting. “Routine Incidents” include works on paper, video loops and her most recent paper sculptures.

Forsyth, who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, holds an MFA from Rutgers University and a BFA from the University of Victoria. She teaches painting and drawing at Washington State University. Images of her work and more information can be found at www.michelleforsyth.com .

The exhibit, presented by the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, remains on display through June 18. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
